• Bu böyle olmaz, kendimizi sevip gölgemizle kucaklaşmamız gibi hayranı olduklarımızın da karanlık taraflarına görmeliyiz deyip Hamdiciğim’in öteki yüzünü anlatan bu kitabı elime aldım. 
• Ve fakat gerçekten de düşündüğümden daha karanlık bir dünyayla karşılaştım. :(
• Açıkçası aynı Canavar kitabında (Canavar: Hayranların İkilemi / Claire Dederer) anlatılan durumla yüzleştim. Ve çok şaşırarak ne yapacağımı bilemez hale geldiğimi itiraf etmeliyim. 
• Zaten okurken durup durup kafamda döndürdüm, her bir anlatıyı. Ancak bittikten sonra da, (halen de olmak üzere), üzerine düşünmüyor değilim. 
• Şu an için geldiğim nokta (belki de gerçekten beslediğim sevgi nedeniyle çok da tarafsız kalmadığımdandır); tamam böyle bir yönü de var kabul ancak hiç de bir faydası olmamış olamaz. 
• Dolayısıyla belki yepyeni bir kitap yazılıp hem onun katkılarını hem de ne yazık ki negatif etkilerini bir arada sunmak daha yerinde olur gibi hissettim. 
• Ancak dediğim gibi bu da yine hayranlığımın bir tezahürü olabilir. 
• Ne oldu bu kadar da seni etkiledi derseniz, tek bir cümleyle kitabı özet geçecek olursam; yazarın, OHB’in bir nevi kahramanlaştırıldığı dönemin 

[bence özellikle Yaratılış tablosu başta olmak üzere, kadınları (Batı’nın hoşlandığı harem temelli oryantalizmden farklı olarak) hayatın içinde bir figür olarak kullanması temelli çok büyük bir bakış açısı faydası olduğunu düşünüyorum ve bunun da kurduğu üniversiteye adının verilmemesine yol açacak kadar da bir karşıt görüşü oluşturduğu kanaatindeyim]

• aynı zamanda ülkemizden en fazla tarihi eser kaçırılan döneme denk gelmesi nedeniyle araştırma ihtiyacı hissedip belgelerle tüm yapılanları ortaya koyması üzerinden gerçekleştirdiği bir kitaplaştırma. 
• Ve çok da güzel ortaya koyduğunu söylemeliyim. 
• Tabii sevgimiz kadar karanlık yönleri de dediğim gibi bilmenin çok büyük bir faydası olduğu bir gerçek.

The Removal of Our Artifacts from Zincirli – The Other Side of Osman Hamdi Bey / Yaşar Yılmaz..

• Thinking “this won’t do—we must not only embrace ourselves and our shadows, but also see the darker sides of those we admire,” I picked up this book about the other side of dear Hamdi.
• And I was truly confronted with a much darker world than I had anticipated. :(
• Honestly, it reminded me of the situation depicted in the Monster book (Claire Dederer). I was so shocked I didn’t even know how to react.
• While reading, I kept pausing and mentally reprocessing each narrative. And even after finishing it (and still now), I find myself reflecting on it.
• Where I currently stand (perhaps due to the affection I feel, which may prevent full objectivity) is: okay, yes, he had this darker side, but it can’t be that he contributed nothing of value.
• So I feel it might be more appropriate for a brand-new book to be written—one that presents both his contributions and, unfortunately, his negative impacts together.
• Then again, maybe this feeling is just another expression of my admiration.
• If you ask what affected me so much, here’s a one-sentence summary of the book: the author documents—through evidence—all that took place during the very period when OHB was being somewhat heroized.

[I personally believe his perspective brought immense value—especially with works like the Creation painting, which depicted women not in harem-based Orientalist fantasy (which the West favored), but as figures integrated into life itself. I also believe this differing approach even led to his name not being given to the university he founded.]

• Simultaneously, since this was the period when the most historical artifacts were removed from our country, the author felt the need to investigate and compiled all the events into this book.
• And I must say, he did an excellent job of it.
• As I said, knowing the darker sides as much as we cherish the light is undeniably valuable.
